We are unfortunately having one of the highest prevalence of HIV AIDS in our country 27 percent of the pregnant mothers coming for the first time to our antenatal clinics are HIV positive.
Where we have made a big impact is on the transmission from the mother to the children because virtually 75 percent of our mothers who are positive they get treatment those who deliver in hospital they get the tablets and only 4 percent of the babies who have tested are positive 95 percent are negative. So that’s a big success compared to the initial about 30 percent of the babies who used to test positive.
People who are now on treatment are getting better then they go back home earlier than in the past and it seems this is helping the population to reduce the stigma and the people to accept the therapy because they see the people who are on therapy getting better… came to hospital on a stretcher, getting better, they gained weight and they go back to work and I think this has got a positive effect and also that stigma is becoming less because even men are now accepting treatment because they were initially hesitant compared to the ladies and children.
