More than 2 million bednets distributed in Niger with Global Fund support
From 19 to 24 December 2005, more than 2 million long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets are distributed to all the mothers with children under five in Niger. Over 3.5 million children are thus going to be protected against malaria.
This massive distribution campaign is made possible by being combined
to a nation-wide polio vaccination campaign and is mainly funded
by the Global Fund (1.8 million bednets are procured with the R4
grant to IFRC), along with
partners such as the Canadian
International Development Agency,
the International Federation
of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and other NGOs.

Hello. I'm Richard Feachem of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The distribution of long lasting bednets together with polio immunization in Niger is an unprecedented and innovative effort to combat malaria in a massive scale. In a matter of just a few days, 2 million families will be able to protect their children against malaria which kills more than one million children in Africa each year. The Global Fund is financing most of these nets as well as more than 100 million bednets across Africa and beyond. The countries with malaria need every child to sleep safely under a bednet. The Global Fund will do its part to make this happen. I want to thank our partners, including the government of Niger, the Red Cross, Canada and many others. Together we are giving the best possible present to the mothers and children of Niger. Thank you.
